Term 2

Term 2

This term, our core text is Stormbreaker by Anthony Horowitz. Alex Rider, was told him his uncle died in an accident because he wasn't wearing a seat belt. But when fourteen-year-old Alex finds his uncle's windshield riddled with bullet holes, he knows it was no accident. What he doesn't know yet is that his uncle was killed while on a top-secret mission. But he is about to, and once he does, there is no turning back.  Igniting the children's imagination and introducing them to the spy genre, the children will be writing their own versions of a spy story.  They will be focusing on building a more vivid pictures in their readers mind by building complex sentences into writing, using relative clauses.

In Maths, Year 5 focus on multiplication and division. Children will use previous knowledge 10s, 100s and 1000s to begin to multiply by these numbers and multiples of these numbers.  There will be specific focus lessons on factors, multiples, prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers. The children will explore the relationships between numbers.   Concrete resources and pictorial representations will help to consolidate their existing knowledge in these areas. Using mathematical language, the children will explain their reasoning in a number of problem-solving activities. Additionally, we will continue to focus on rapid recall of times tables, this is vital for understanding this term.  Focusing on times tables in class and at home will allow children to recall these facts efficiently. We have a number of class incentives running and children will be using the new iPads to participate in Arena battles in TT Rockstars. To ensure continuous progression in this area, we are encouraging all children to use this app at home, ideally for 10 minutes, 3 times per week, or whenever possible.

For Reading, the children will be focusing on core skills such as retrieval, vocabulary, and inference throughout our guided reading sessions.  There will be many opportunities for class reading, individual reading and reading for pleasure.  Please continue to encourage your child to read at home for at least 10 minutes per day. If you do not have your Bug Club login details, please contact your child’s class teacher.

In Science, the children will be expanding their knowledge of sound and explore pitch and volume this term.

In DT, the children will become design engineers, re-designing improved versions of existing classroom products, with a little inspiration from Dyson.

In Computing, children will be using Purple Mash to learn how to behave safely online.

In PSHE children will be learning about people's attitudes to money and making their own decisions about the rewards and risks associated with these attitudes.

In RE, children will be learning about incarnation.

Throughout all our teaching and learning we will have a strong focus on Oracy and listening.  We will inspire the children to better understand themselves, each other and the world around them by developing learners who can think critically, reason together and have the vocabulary to express their knowledge and understanding.
