Term 5

During History this term, we will be learning about Pocahontas. We will be exploring different record methods throughout history and evaluating their reliability. Pupils will look into the significance of Pocahontas in our history and the timeline of the Powhatan people. We will using some of the following key vocabulary in our work:

  • Colony/colonist
  • Powhatan
  • Significant
  • Territory
  • Evidence

In English, we will be learning how to use adverbs and subordinating conjunctions in our writing including the subordinating conjunctions because, when and if. We will continue to identify different word types too. Children will re-write a story based on the book The Paper Bag Princess applying their previous knowledge of expanded noun phrases and newly learnt skills of subordinating conjunctions.

In Phonics, we will continue to identify different ways of spelling a sound using our Sounds-Write scheme. We will practise segmenting and blending words to read and spell, with the addition to polysyllabic sounds. Our reading books will review the phonics that we have been learning in class.

Maths this term will focus on fractions including solving two-step problems. We will also move on to length and height; using concrete resources and visuals to develop our understanding.

In Art this term, we will be exploring fantasy worlds and creatures. We will explore textured imprinting and drawing throughout the term. Our final piece will be using clay to explore create a fantasy creature. We will evaluate our design to ensure that it is suitable and meets our design and will make suggestions to improve our designs.

PSHE lessons will focus on what makes us grown healthy. We will learn about how keep out bodies healthy through food and exercise. We will cover how to keep our teeth healthy and also how to stay safe and healthy in the sun.

Science lessons will also focus on staying healthy. We will build on our understanding from term 3 developing our knowledge of animals including humans. We will explore the effects of a healthy diet, regular exercise and personal hygiene on our physical health and mental well being.

For RE, we will continue to explore the question ‘Who is Muslim and what do they believe?’. We will express our own beliefs and respectfully listen to the views of others.

In Computing, children will learn how to use technology to organise, sort, create and retrieve information using questioning.

This term in PE we will be learning invasion skills with our PE coach Mr Corcoran. We will be developing different sport skills including Cricket. With our class teachers, we will be participating in striking and fielding skills. We will learn how to precisely and accurately use equipment in games. Please ensure that children have a PE jumper to wear as we may have PE outdoors.

For Reading, please continue to encourage your child to read at home for at least 10 minutes. Thank you for your continued support with our new phonics reading scheme.

Please also continue to practise times tables and spellings for the weekly tables and spelling tests. Reading records are to be brought in every Monday and Thursday and books will be changed.
