Term 1

Term 1

In Maths, we will recap key concepts from Year 1 such as number bonds to 10 and 20. We will then spend some time exploring place value and ways of partitioning number flexibly using part whole models up to 100.

In English, we will recap and build upon grammar elements learnt in Year 1 such as: nouns, adjectives and verbs.  We will learn about past and present tense and how to use the conjunction ‘and’.  The children will explore these concepts using the text Billy and the Dragon by Nadia Shireen.

In History, we will learn all about ‘The Great Fire of London’.  The children will explore the origins of the fire and its effects throughout London.  They will also consider the subsequent changes that were made as a result of the fire.

In Art we will explore figurative art.  Pupils will have the opportunity to explore various elements of portraiture and learn about different artists.  They will combine their new skills and work towards creating a final cubist piece.

PSHE lessons will focus on friendship.  We will explore what makes a good friend and how to be one.

In Science, we will focus on living things.  Here we will learn about what all living things need to survive.  Pupils will explore various habitats and the way in which animals have adapted to live there.

During RE this term, our big question is: How and why we do we celebrate special and sacred times? We will consider how members of our family, school and wider community celebrate, before exploring other religions.

In Computing, our theme for the term is Online Safety.  The children will explore how to search safely using the search bar and to refine searches using the platform Purple Mash. They will also learn how to share their work electronically within the school online community. Any work will be approved by a teacher before it is displayed.

Balance, control and ball skills will be the core focus of PE lessons as the children learn to ‘Send and Receive’ with Mr Corcoran. Please ensure that children have a PE jumper and tracksuit bottoms as PE lessons will take place outside, weather permitting.  The children will also have Dance lessons with Miss Sargent.  PE days for Allington are Monday and Tuesday, PE days for Thurnham are Tuesday and Wednesday.

Please encourage your child to read at home for at least 10 minutes daily.  Books will be given that support the sounds that we are learning about in class during phonics and will be changed on Mondays and Thursdays.

Reading journals should be brought in to school every day. In them are a list of spellings that your child will be tested on each Friday.
