Term 5
In English this term we will be linking our learning on Explorers in History to create our very own journal as an explorer. We will be learning to write in the past tense and how to ensure our sentences are sequenced correctly. We will be using a range of ‘Little People, big dreams’ books to learn all about the adventures of the different explorers. Near the end of term, the children will take part in a dress up day where they are invited to attend school dressed as their idea of an explorer. More details to follow nearer the time!
In Phonics this term, we will be covering these sounds:
- /ar/ using the spellings ar, a au
- /o/ using the spellings o and a
- The spelling of <g> that makes the sound /j/ or /g/
- /f/ using the spellings of f, ff, ph
- /k/ using the spellings of c, k, ck, ch,cc
In Guided Reading we will be consolidating our phonics learning We will be reading a class text every week, where the children will practise listening, echo and choral reading. Please continue to read your child’s school book with them for at least 10 minutes every day. Please record all reading in their Learning Journals.
In Maths we are going to learn about mass and volume. We will use the language of heavier and lighter, the children will measure and compare mass. Then the children will learn about volume and capacity included the use of the language ‘full, empty, nearly full, nearly empty’. Then they will compare volumes and then compare and measure capacity. Later on in the term we will start learning about multiplication and division. By the end of the term the children should be able to count in 2’s, 5’2 and 10’s, know what an ‘array’ is and complete tasks with ‘grouping’ and ‘sharing’.
In History this term we will be looking at significant people that have changed the world we live in today. We will be looking at famous explorers and adventurers throughout history, from Marco Polo to Neil Armstrong; discussing how the innovation of technology has enabled their exploration.

The area focus of DT this term is windmills. We will be learning about the purpose of a windmill and the structure. In addition to this, we will be understanding the word ‘design’ and designing for a purpose.
In RE, we will be exploring the sacred books of Christianity and Islam. The children will begin the topic by bringing in their own special books, and exploring the meaning of ‘special’ and ‘sacred’ and why their books are special to them. We will later delve into the Bible and the Qur’an and their sacred meanings to Christians and Muslims. We will be exploring how both sacred books are used as guidance in the day-to-day lives of their respective communities. Using our prior knowledge, we will discover the meaning of forgiveness through the story of ‘The Unforgiving Servant’ and having respect for all using the story, ‘the Crying Camel’.
In PSHE, we will be exploring the question ‘who helps keep us safe?’ We will be starting our learning with a discussion about who are our trusted adults inside and outside of school. Then the children will learn what to do if they get lost, and also how to prevent getting lost. Later in the term, the children will be learning to identify what an emergency is and what is not an emergency, followed by understanding how to make an emergency phone call. We will finish our learning in the term with a discussion of how to communicate our worries and what to do to make you feel better about them.
In Science, we will be exploring plants. Over the term, we will be growing our own plants in class to support our learning. Firstly, we will be looking at what plants needs to survive and then will label the different parts of a plant and learn what important jobs they do. Following on from that, the children will learn the differences between evergreen and deciduous trees and finally we will be looking at what plants are edible and what plants are not.
In music the children will be having fun with improvisation (composing).
This term the children will be taught dance by Miss Sargent. In their other PE lessons, the children will develop the basic skills required in invasion games such as sending, receiving and dribbling a ball. They will develop their understanding of attacking and defending and what being 'in possession' means. They have the opportunity to play uneven and even sided games. They learn how to score points in these types of games and how to play to the rules. They work independently, with a partner and in a small group and begin to self-manage their own games, showing respect and kindness towards their teammates and opponents.
