Term 5

This term, we are learning all about Ancient Greece. We will identify Ancient Greece on a map, learn about Alexander the Great and consider the achievements of this ancient civilisation and its impact on our modern day lives. We will be exploring artefacts loaned to us by Maidstone Museum and will pose historical questions as part of our historical inquiry. We will also listen to and read a variety of Greek myths and learn about Ancient Greek gods.

In English, we are developing our understanding of non-fiction and presentational features to write our own texts to inform the reader.  We will also revise the use of conjunctions to extend our sentences. We are looking forward to writing reports about flowers and Greek gods, using headings and subheadings, paragraphs and technical language.

In Mathematics, we will explore the concept of fractions. We will find unit and non-unit fractions of objects and amounts. We will compare, order and add fractions using bar models and counters to consolidate our understanding. We will continue to revise our 2, 5 and 10 times tables and use our 3, 4 and 8 times tables to complete calculations.  Please practice quick recall of all these tables so that we can work efficiently and with good pace.

In Science, we are learning about plants.  We will revise what plants need to survive and will conduct investigations to find out how plants thrive in different conditions. We will also investigate the lifecycle of plants; growing sunflowers and tomatoes to make observations and record our findings. We will undertake a plant dissection to identify the different parts of flowering plants and we will learn about their functions.

In Art, we will be studying the work of sculptor Andy Goldsworthy.  We will explore the different materials and inspiration that Goldsworthy uses in his art.

In our French lessons, we are learning how to introduce ourselves using basic conversational language.

In RE, we are learning what different people believe about God. We will discuss the importance of the belief of God to religious followers as well as considering the challenges of believing or not believing in God. Through our discussions, we will begin to develop our own individual beliefs about God and religion.
