Coxheath Primary School

Term 5

‘Down on the Farm’

We cannot wait to begin our learning this term with our fantastic new topic ‘Down on the Farm’!  Our topic kicks off with Julia Donaldson’s wonderful story ‘What the Ladybird Heard’.  In Expressive Art and Design, we will be putting the story to music and joining in with the rhymes and rhythm.  We will sketch some real life ladybirds and experiment with watercolours. We will eventually transfer these drawings onto pebbles to create some wonderful 3D ladybirds.  The children will share their knowledge of farms and farm animals, and we will consider farms that exist in our locality.

Our role-play area will become a farm shop with lots of delicious fresh produce on offer.  Children will become shoppers and shop assistants and learn to handle money, recognise coins and look after and restock their shop.  We will be using vegetables for printing and painting.  Our learning will also take in the wonderfully animated story, ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ and the children will begin to learn about lifecycles and how living things grow. We will grow a range of plants from seed, taking responsibility for their care and begin to discuss what plants need to grow.

The children will see a working farm first hand when we visit the Rare Breeds Centre in the Kent Countryside.  We will be looking at the farm map and learning about how maps help us.

Our topic will end with the wonderful story ‘Errol’s Garden’ a heart-warming tale of community imagination and a passion for plants.  We will end our topic with a wonderful garden centre with parents invited to attend to see the children’s delightful, green-fingered creations!
