Coxheath Primary School

Term 3

Term 3

This term, we will be exploring all things Dinosaur within our History sessions and our English text, ‘If I had a Dinosaur.’ Within our history sessions we will be finding out lots of interesting information about dinosaurs, including looking back in time to the Mesozoic Era to find out about what life for dinosaurs was like and how our world has changed throughout history. We will be exploring the diverse types of dinosaurs, looking at what historical event concluded in the extinction of dinosaurs and looking at some local history through Iggy the Iguanodon, whose fossilised skeleton is displayed in Maidstone Museum. We will be looking at the differences in our planet from the Mesozoic era to now. Through our core text, in English we will be learning how to write simple sentences, including capital letters, finger spaces and full stops. We will be continuously recapping our learning from the last two terms, emphasising using a sound mat to help spell words and defining how nouns, verbs and adjectives are used within sentences.

We will be learning the following key vocabulary:

Fossil

Dinosaur

Mammal

Extinct

Palaeontologist

Pangaea

Reptile

Throughout the term, we will be looking closely at fossils and how they have had a significant impact on our knowledge of dinosaurs and what life on our planet was like millions of years ago.

Children are having their daily Phonics and Guided Reading lessons, which help them to read, blend and segment words, allowing them to become confident, fluent readers and writers. ‚ÄčIn our Phonics lessons, we are continuing to recap the Phase 3 and 5 sounds, ensuring children can read and write real and alien words including them. In our Guided Reading lessons, we will be focussing on gaining reading fluency and getting the children to identify familiar words by sight. Comprehension will also be more of a focus and all children will be answering written and multiple-choice questions about their reading book weekly.

In Maths, we will be exploring addition and subtraction. We will be using manipulatives, such as number lines, a part-whole model and tens frames to support the children with this.

In Art, we will be creating fossils out of clay. We will be exploring different fossils, learning how to mould clay, use tools to create marks in the clay and finally put the skills and knowledge together to create a clay fossil.

In our French lessons, we will be learning the days of the week and months of the year in French. We will be singing lots of songs to help the children with this.

In PE, we will be doing yoga, where the children will learn about mindfulness and awareness. They will begin to learn poses and techniques that will help them connect their mind and body. The unit looks to improve wellbeing by building strength, flexibility and balance. The learning includes postures and breathing taught through fun and engaging activities.

In RE, we will be exploring sacred places. We will be learning about churches, mosques and synagogues and then comparing the features of these three settings. We will also explore what places are special to the children.

Our Computing work will be based on Purple Mash again this term. The children will be learning how to follow and create simple instructions on the computer and how to use the direction keys to create and set challenges.

For Reading, please continue to read your child’s school book with them every day. Please record all reading in their Learning Journals and tally up the reads for your child’s teacher to see.
