Term 4

This term, we will be covering Geography and our topic will be Migration. We will be learning about the many different reasons why people may move locations and the impact this has on communities. We will also study the ‘Windrush’ generation through the story ‘Coming to England’ by Floella Benjamin.

In Design and Technology, we will be designing and making individual slingshot cars. The children we learn how to build a strong chassis to keep their car stable. We will race them at the end of topic to see who has built the fastest car!

In English, our focus will be on narrative writing. For this, we will learn how to use speech punctuation and the effect this has on their writing.  Speech punctuation is a new concept for the children in year 4 so we will be using the whole of term 4 to ensure the children can use it confidently and effectively in their writing.

In Maths, we will be exploring fractions. For the fractions topic, we will recap how to find fractions of amounts and then cover: equivalent fractions, fractions greater than 1, adding fractions and counting in fractions. They will be completing fluency activities to ensure the concepts are secure and also problem solving challenges to ensure the children can apply their knowledge.

In RE, the question we will be investigating is ‘What can we learn from religions about what is right and wrong?’; drawing comparisons between religions and religious teachings.

For PE, we will be doing tennis and basketball. Please ensure your child has the correct kit for both of these sessions. PE will be done outside so a tracksuit and trainers would be suitable.

For music, we will be learning the ukulele. A specialist teacher will come in every Tuesday morning and teach both year 4 classes for a 30-minute session each. The school has enough ukuleles for each child so there is no expectation for you to provide this.

Times tables is a huge focus in year 4. The expectation is that by the end of this academic year the children will know all their times tables up to 12 x 12. We will be testing the children on their times tables weekly.

For Reading, please continue to read with your child for 10 minutes every day if possible. A reading book will be sent home with each child every night. Please record any home reading in the Learning Journal.
