Term 4

This term, we will be learning all about mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes. We will be looking at how these are formed and locate significant examples of these on maps. We will be examining case studies from around the world. We will also be learning about some of the impact of eruptions and quakes on human life.

In English, we will be developing our descriptive writing to entertain the reader.  We will also be learning to identify and use apostrophes for singular possession and how to punctuate speech.  We will be working towards writing a partial narrative.

In Mathematics, we will be multiplying and dividing.  We will work progressively through the 3, 4 and 8 times table, each time looking at multiplying and immediately following this with division so pupils can make the links between the focus multiplication before moving onto the next one.  We will also be looking at how we can use known facts to help us reach answers. It would be incredibly helpful if you could support your child with the quick recall of all these tables in a random order so that they are able to work efficiently and with good pace.

In Science, we will be exploring work connected with magnets.  We will be finding out about whether all metals are magnetic and how magnets can be used in everyday life.  We will be using the words attract and repel to describe how magnets act towards each other.

In Art, we will be working with our resident artist, Mrs Planck, this term.  We will be working with textiles in a range of ways in this topic.  We will start of by learning about the process of tie-dyeing and then carrying out some dyeing of our own.  We will then move on to learn about and create some weaving before working towards creating a final piece combining all our new skills.

In our Music lessons, the focus for much of our work will be composition. Through the course of the term, the pupils will also develop an understanding of duration, pulse, rhythm and pitch. They will also learn to sing a couple of songs of different styles in unison. They will explore different ways to record their compositions, including using digital media on iPads.

In RE, we will be learning about why religious festivals are important in Christian communities. We will look at celebrations that are important to us as individuals. We will then revisit the Easter story and discuss the importance of rituals in celebrating religious festivals.

For Computing, we will be learning about how to present using Microsoft PowerPoint.  The children will learn how to use text boxes, animations, media and timings.  They will create a presentation using the skills that they acquire during the next few weeks. We will use Purple Mash to complete this work and this is something that the children can access from home if they wish to explore it further for themselves.

In PSHE, we will be exploring the meaning of community and our own individual role within the community.  We will discuss different types of groups within our school and wider community. We look at different charities and how we can care for others.

In Walmer, PE will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays. In Bodiam, PE will take place on Tuesdays and Fridays. We will be doing lessons in dodgeball and basketball and so they should have appropriate clothing for working outdoors.

For Reading, please continue to read with your child for 10 minutes every day and sign their diary as all children are working towards their reading badges. Please continue to practise their spellings and times tables regularly.
