Term 5

This term, we will be covering Geography and our topic will be Natural Resources. We will be finding the answers to the following questions:

  • What are the world's natural resources?
  • How has the use of natural resources changed?
  • How can using natural resources cause problems?
  • What natural resources do the UK and Chile have?

In English, our focus will be on explanation writing. Initially, we will learn how to identify an explanation text by identifying presentational features and technical language. We will work towards applying these features into our very own explanation text about scooters.

Our Art will be the theme of ‘Waves and Oceans’ in term 6. We will be working towards creating a piece of art using block printing using 2 colours.

In Maths, we will continue to consolidate our understanding of fractions. We will recap how to find fractions of amounts and then cover: adding and subtracting fractions, improper fractions and mixed fractions. The children will then move on to decimals. We will be completing fluency activities to ensure the concepts are secure and also problem-solving challenges to ensure the children can apply their knowledge.

In RE, the question we will be investigating is ‘Why are festivals important to religious communities?’ Concentrating mainly on Islamic festivals, we will consider the similarities and differences with Christian festivals and discuss their importance to followers.

For PE, we will be playing tennis and cricket. Please ensure your child has the correct kit for both sessions. PE will be done outside. As the weather is warming up, please can the children return to shorts and t shirt for their PE kit. A plain black/blue jumper (preferably not a hoody, due to health and safety) can be added to the kit bag.

In science, our topic is Living Things and their Habitats. We will learn about different animals and where they live and how they have adapted to their habitats.

For music, we will be learning the ukulele. A specialist teacher will come in every Tuesday morning and teach both year 4 classes for a 30-minute session each. The school has enough ukuleles for each child so there is no expectation for you to provide this.

The year 4 multiplication check is fast approaching in term 6 so any extra practice would be beneficial. The expectation is that by the end of this academic year the children will know all their times tables up to 12 x 12. We will be testing the children on their times tables weekly. Please continue to help the children with their focused times table for that week but please do also concentrate on learning other times tables. These can be found in the back of their reading journals. Regular TTRockstars practise is advised.

For Reading, please continue to read with your child for 10 minutes every day if possible. A reading book will be sent home with each child every night. Please record any home reading in the Learning Journal. Please encourage your child to share their likes and preferences of books, genres and authors with their class Reading Ambassador. The ambassadors can then share class thoughts and preferences within their weekly meetings.
