This term, we will be learning all about mountains, volcanoes and earthquakes. We will be looking at how these are formed and locate significant examples of these on maps. We will be examining case studies from Guatemala and Japan. We will also be learning about some of the impact of eruptions and quakes on human life. Something new we will be trialling this term is sending home the Knowledge Organiser for geography that we use in class to support their learning so that you too can see the key terminology and facts that we are referring to.
In English, we will be developing our descriptive writing to entertain the reader. We will also be learning to identify and use apostrophes for singular possession and how to punctuate speech. We will be working towards writing a partial narrative.
In Mathematics, we will be moving on to looking at how we estimate answers to addition and subtraction calculations before carrying out the calculations and seeing how close we were to our answers. We will then be moving onto multiplication and division. We will be starting with arrays and then moving onto using the bar model. We will revise our 2, 5 and 10 times tables and use our 3, 4 and 8 times tables to complete calculations. Please practice quick recall of all these tables in a random order so that they are able to work efficiently and with good pace.
In science, we will be continuing to explore work connected with forces and magnets. We will be finding out about whether all metals are magnetic and how magnets can be used in everyday life. In forces, we will be looking more at ways in which we can increase and decrease the amount of friction on a surface.
In art, we will be studying the work of artist Rebecca Vincent. She is famous for creating pieces of work through layered printing. (You will find examples of her work on the internet and on YouTube) We will be exploring different types of printing techniques including block printing, using materials and fabric to achieve different effects and using masking tape to mask out shapes before printing over the top. We will be working towards creating a final piece that is reflective of a mountain scene.
In our music lessons, we will be listening to and appraising The Dragon Dance song and other Chinese inspired music. We will also be learning to sing The Dragon Dance song in unison using our voices in a controlled and expressive way. We will apply our previous learning of glockenspiels to play the song alongside using vocals.
In RE, we will be learning about why religious festivals are important in Christian communities. We will revisit the Easter story and discuss the importance of rituals in celebrating religious festivals.
For Computing, we will be learning about branching databases. We will categorise items from different topics and use software to create a branching database. We will identify errors and work out how to debug them. We will be using Purple Mash to complete this work and this is something the children can access from home if they wanted to explore it further for themselves.
In PSHE, we will be exploring the meaning of community and our own individual role within the community. We will discuss different types of jobs within our school and wider community.
In Walmer, PE will take place on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. In Bodiam, PE will take place on Mondays and Wednesdays. We will be doing lessons in dodgeball and basketball and so they should have appropriate clothing for working outdoors.
For Reading, please continue to read with your child for 10 minutes every day.
