Wellbeing

Coxheath Primary school is committed to creating a nurturing and inclusive community for all. We believe that pupils’ emotional and social development is essential for them to progress academically. Our focus on nurture extends to all members of the school community. We feel that in order for all pupils to feel safe and engage with high quality learning, it is important to invest in Wellbeing and Mental Health support for all staff.

Our nurture provision is underpinned by the 6 principles of Nurture established by the work of Marjorie Boxall and others. They are as follows:

  1. Children’s learning is understood developmentally
  2. The nurture room offers a safe base
  3. The importance of nurture for the development of wellbeing
  4. Language is a vital means of communication
  5. All behaviour is communication
  6. The importance of transition in children’s lives.

Wellbeing and Nurture at Coxheath Primary School

At Coxheath Primary School we believe that pupils emotional and social development is essential for them to progress academically. Through the use of a range of activities: drawing, games, reading, Lego Therapy and craft we help promote social skills, talking, listening and developing friendships.

Before School

It is our aim to make sure that all children have a happy and fulfilled school life. The Nurture room is open at 08.40am each day providing juice, toast, biscuits and fruit to help children that may need support with their transition from home to the school environment, which sometimes can be challenging.

During School

The children have access to the Nurture TA throughout the day, whether this is for 1:1 scheduled Well Being interventions or if they just require some emotional support at that point in time. The Nurture TA uses a range of activities to support the child’s emotional needs.

EWT

At Coxheath Primary School we are proud to be working alongside the Emotional Well Being Team. Working under the supervision of Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services, EWTs provide support for children and their families who may be experiencing anxiety that has an impact upon, not only their school day, but their general day to day lives.

The EWT’s adopt a ‘Whole School Approach’ and ensure that support is offered to all the school community to ensure that all specific needs are met, this includes planning and delivering workshops to support staff emotional wellbeing.

Well Being Team

Coxheath Primary School is proud to have achieved the Kent Award for Resilience and Emotional Wellbeing in recognition of the work we have completed on promoting the emotional wellbeing of both staff and pupils. Within the school, a Wellbeing Team has been established with representatives from across all roles. The team meet termly and discuss ways to improve staff wellbeing, arranging wellbeing events and providing sign posts via the Staff Well-Being board to external services that staff can reach out to if needed.
