Term 1

In English, our focus will be on ensuring the children can identify nouns, verbs and adjectives in a sentence. We will also be working on making sure they can write grammatically sound sentences, which use full stops correctly. We’ll also move on to look at using expanded noun phrases and prepositional phrases.

In Maths, we will be focusing on place value (partitioning, ordering, comparing and rounding numbers) and addition and subtraction (written methods for both using a written method with exchanging).

This term, we will be covering History and our topic will be The Romans. We will be learning about why the Romans invaded and what life was like in Britain under their rule.

For DT, we will be designing and making a pavilion. We’ll be looking at the features of different pavilions and how we can ensure structures are made strong.

In RE, the question we will be investigating is ‘Why is Jesus inspiring to some people?’ and will explore the views of different people.

In term 1, we are fortunate to have two PE sessions each with a specialist teacher. On a Monday, the children have a dance session with Miss Sargent and on a Wednesday, they have tag rugby with Mr Corcoran.

For Music, we will be learning the ukulele. A specialist teacher will come in every Tuesday morning and teach both year 4 classes for a 30-minute session each. The school has enough ukuleles for each child so there is no expectation for you to provide this.

Times tables is a huge focus in year 4. The expectation is that by the end of this academic year the children will know all their times tables up to 12 x 12 and they should continue to practise on TT Rockstars. We will be testing the children on their times tables weekly.

For Reading, please continue to read with your child for 10 minutes every day if possible. A reading book will be sent home with each child every night. Please record any home reading in the Learning Journal.
