Term 5

‘Down on the Farm’

We cannot wait to begin our learning this term with our fantastic new topic ‘Down on the Farm’!  Our topic kicks off with the children’s classic ‘The Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle, a marvellous tale of transformation.   This familiar tale will offer the children the opportunity to sequence events within the story and engage in craft including caterpillar collage.

The children will read Julia Donaldson’s wonderful story ‘What the Ladybird Heard’.  In Expressive Art and Design we will be putting the story to music and joining in with the rhymes and rhythm.  We will be sketching some real life ladybirds and using these sketches to improve our artwork with watercolours, eventually transferring these onto pebbles to create some wonderful 3D ladybirds.  This mini art project will offer the children the opportunity to critique their artwork and consider ways to make it even better.  The children will share their knowledge of farms and farm animals and we will consider farms that exist in our locality and those that we have visited.

Our role-play area will be extended to incorporate a farm shop with lots of delicious fresh produce on offer.  Children will become shoppers and shop assistants and learn to handle money, recognise coins and look after and restock their shop.  We will be using vegetables for printing and painting.  The children will begin to learn about lifecycles and how living things grow and the things they need in order to be healthy and flourish.  The children will grow a range of plants from seed, taking responsibility for their care.

The children will visit a working farm first hand when we visit the Rare Breeds Centre in the Kent Countryside.  We will be meeting the farm animals and their offspring!  We will be looking at the farm map and learning about how we read maps and how they help us.

Our topic will end with the wonderful story ‘Errol’s Garden’ a heart-warming tale of community imagination and a passion for plants.  We will close our topic with a wonderful garden centre with parents invited to attend to see the children’s delightful, green-fingered creations!
